In today’s blog post I want to highlight the three most important natural supplements that we use in our weight loss offices to boost GLP-1 production and suppress appetite. These are the supplements that we trust the most due to the scientific literature, but this is not an all-encompassing list. As always, when we talk about taking natural supplements, it is of utmost importance to take them at the right times and at the right dosages to get the desired effect.
First on the list is green coffee bean extract. The link between the active ingredient in green coffee bean, chlorogenic acid, and the natural stimulation of GLP-1 has been studied in depth. One such study states that, “Eight weeks of regular green coffee consumption by people with type 2 diabetes not only improved fasting blood glucose but also increased the insulin sensitivity and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)”. Here the researchers found that Green coffee bean not only stimulated GLP-1, but also improved fasting blood glucose levels. Both of these are extremely important for weight loss and overall health. When we give Green coffee bean to clients we often give it in capsule form, twice per day.
Next let’s talk about the supplement rhodiola. This is another plant-based supplement that, in our office, is combined with the number three supplement on this list to formulate a powerful appetite suppressant. Let’s again look at the research. One study states that, “Salidroside from Rhodiola wallichiana var. cholaensis reverses insulin resistance and stimulates the GLP-1 secretion by alleviating ROS-mediated activation of MAPKs signaling pathway and mitigating apoptosis”. Again, this study shows a direct link between taking rhodiola and the stimulation of GLP-1. Since we have a proprietary product containing both rhodiola and the supplement next on this list, we will discuss how we dose clients after number three on the list.
Finally (and, again, this list is not all encompassing), let’s talk about the supplement glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid along with glycine, leucine, lysine, etc. While many amino acids show the ability to naturally stimulate GLP-1 production in the human body, Glutamine has the most solid research. One such article states that, “Glutamine was a more potent GLP-1 secretagogue than glucose or other amino acids, increasing GLP-1 release 7.1+/-0.7-fold”. Yes, you read this correctly, taking glutamine can increase GLP-1 production by sevenfold. Glutamine is the supplement that we rely on most heavily when the goal is suppressing appetite with our weight loss clients. Again, since we manufacture a proprietary product containing both rhodiola and glutamine (along with other fat burners), we have our clients take this liquid product one in the morning, once in the afternoon and then right before bed. Doing so keeps the levels of these substances fairly constant in the clients bloodstream.
The key to taking supplements for weight loss is in the timing and dosages. Far too often people feel that weight loss supplements are “junk” because they are not taken correctly. It is important to look at, and rely on, the available data before spending money on dietary supplements for weight loss.
